Yes back again. Apparently, I am on a knitting roll! I am trying to de-stash and these two patterns came along so here I am. This is Mid-December by A Crafty House.
I used stashed yarn so as a result I ran one row short but who's looking right? Great pattern, very easy, so you beginners out there, NOW is the time! Knit and purl, that's all you need to know girls! What are you waiting for?

It will be a little gift to my cousin. You remember her right? She deserves a little treat after looking after hospitalized hubby for sooooo long.

And I don't mean the dark ones on my head. This blog began as a knitting blog and that's what today's post is about. This is the GAP-tastic Cowl by Jen Geigley. This is a free Ravelry download.
Ignore the cleaning clothes sweats please, I did not dress up for you, I am sorry. See how long and lovely? A great infinity scarf/cowl. Love it! And DN1 loved it. I knit it for her. I tried a pattern last year that was a disaster. This one is scrumptious. And the yarn, oh the yarn. It is Malabrigo Pearl (3 years old) doubled, knit on 9mm circulars. (Wish I ordered from Jimmy Beans, I paid waaaay more than that!)

If you are looking for one of these patterns, it is quick, simple and lovely. Really, give it a try. Below is my gorgeous eldest wearing GAP-tastic. She asked me to deliver it to her at work. So like a good mum, I did.

Hi! Remember me? I am the blogger everyone forgot? So I have been on an unexpected bloggy break apparently. I know it's inexcusable but have much to tell you. First, it was my birthday yesterday and I got some lovely presents! Dad and oldest daughter got me the lovely mugs and teapot from you-know-who. I am drinking my Keurig coffee from one right now!

And second little surprise is Marmalade. Mother knew I wanted a ginger cat since Pumpkin, our previous ginger, that had been given to my by one of my mother's neighbours as a "stray" turned out to be someone else's cat! I had him for many months under false pretenses! How hilarious is that? Anyhow, this bundle of sweetness is not overly found of overweight, snoring, snuffly pugs and has had quite a few hissy fits. But we are working on that. I fear there may be some kind of intervention needed in the future however they seem to be tolerating eachother at the moment.

Next order of business. A close family member was critically injured in a devastating construction accident and quite nearly lost his life. My husband and I are very close to this cousin and his wife so I have been at the hospital almost daily for the last three weeks. He has suffered numerous injuries but the other worker was killed in the accident so we are eternally thankful he is alive. We are lucky he is being treated at one of the best hospitals in the country and has come a very long way since he was admitted.

DN2 is safely ensconced at school and doing well in both hockey and her pre-med program. DN1 is in her fifth year, taking a PR grad program and working like a fiend when she isn't in school. She broke up with her boyfriend of 4 years in early September and I cannot express to you how devastated she was! It was not pleasant around her for those first couple of weeks! And if you can believe it, my youngest is now in grade 8. Highschool next year!

"The Help" was Amazing

Well I loved it! Great movie, fantastic clothes, gorgeous kitchens and the acting, well let's just say there MUST be Oscar buzz. Especially Octavia Spencer that plays the character "Minny". Quite outstanding.
But the pie! The scenes with the chocolate pies made my mouth water (except that certain scene, and those that have read the book or have seen the movie know exactly what I mean). But this led me on a quest, so as a result I have found two recipes that are suppose to be either the pie recipe from the actual movie and the pie recipe from the author's maid, Demetrie.

Please let me know if you try either of them! Yummmmm!

Peony Time!

I know this picture isn't great but the camera has been rather grumpy lately. I had to take this with my blackberry. The peonies are in bloom and they are quite lovely. We have had some wicked stormy weather here the last few days and I was worried they would be destroyed completely! I just love the scent of them.

I am patiently waiting for the curtains. They will be completed soon but I thought I would give you a little picture I took shortly after I painted the bedroom. Not sure if I like the shades I made for the dressing table lamps? What do you think? The originals are cream damask. Something to ponder.

I am still nursing the patient. Her six week post op appointment is Tuesday so we are hoping for some good news. The scars seem to be healing quite well and we have been applying Vitamin E cream which has seemed to speed up the healing process. But she still has some pain when she tries to do too much. My goodness this is a long recovery. Athletes do not sit still very well! And I am not getting half the things done I thought I would!

Here is the patient holding the incredible hailstones from Wednesday evening. We were lucky the cars didn't get dented, they were huge.

I wish I had more to report, but things have been slow around here.

Climbing Roses and Life

Hello my Lovelies! I know it has been so very long. But I have many good reasons for my absence. Dn2, the hockey player, had bunion surgery 2.5 weeks ago and all I have done for those weeks is the Florence Nightingale thing. 24/7. Both feet were done so it was basically impossible for her do anything for herself. It has been a difficult road for her. A girl that is as active and as fit as her to sit/sleep in the same position for such a long drawn out period. And seeing her in so much pain is really quite horrid for a mother to bear. The recovery is very long for this surgery and we are anticipating her immobility for another two months or so.

I don't leave the house for very long. Maybe a half hour to run to the chemist or to pick up milk etc. So I have not bought one plant for the garden. Not that I am behind at all as the weather here has been wet. Record breaking wet. No one has done any planting as the ground is quite soppy. But I do need to figure out which climbing rose I will plant against the new potting shed.

I want a vigorous one obviously. Fast growing, deep pink or cerise with a fragrance and a repeat bloomer. I know, not much to ask for right? America? Galway Bay? I just can't make a decision.

The curtains in the bedroom still are not done yet. But I did paint the game room/play room about a month ago. It felt so good to get that accomplished and pitched bag fulls that went to charity. I painted it "Elephant's Breath" the Farrow and Ball colour and am so please with it. Fantastic colour I must say.

Well if anyone has suggestions for a great climbing rose I would be terribly appreciative!

And for my Canadian friends have a wonderful Victoria Day weekend!

I still have not had the seamstress lady in to see if she can make my curtains, but I thought you would like to see the colour of the room and the bed and my lovely, lovely prints. The centre ones are the little sweeties I was waiting for from an etsy seller. They are so charming! And the other two are from my dear friend, Clara, who is now regretting the fact that she gave them to me. They look that sweet above my bed.

Things have been terribly busy here. I have DN2 home for the week from school and next week is break for the youngest one.

I also NEED to finish this room. It has dragged on far too long and I just want to get it done. But I refuse to hang any more pics til the curtains are done as that can give a whole new look to a room and would rather wait til that is done.

So that's all you get for now!

Crafty Goodness and Some Sweet Loveliness

Before I begin with all the loveliness can I show you my cottage pie? It was just such a perfect looking pie we didn't want to eat it! But I quickly came back to reality when DN3 said "you're taking a picture of that?"

I know, moving right along...

Craftiness. Not a word used around here lately, but I did manage two of these little cuties. One for me and one for Mother. It is a crocheted granny square done in pure, lovely wool. Then I felted it! My hot pots are very comfy now.

Then I lined the back of it with this lurvely fabric. If you plan on making one please email me and I will give you a few hints.

This charming bit of goodness I ordered for myself. Love it except for the fact I cannot get the melted candle out.

Gorgeous rose scented candle and holder from Ikea. I received two of these for Christmas from DN1's BF and adore them. Simple beauty. Did you see the pretty books? From DN1. My sweet daughter believes that mother should get everything she writes on her list. And I did!

Where did I get this darling little gem? Well my best friend, Clara, felt I needed more cornishware. And voila.

See how it fits in ever so cosy like? Too much happiness over here!

Isn't it just so easy to love Cornishware?

Clara also treated me to this delightful Limoges plate.

My heart is warm.

It Burned to a Crisp

For those that were waiting with bated breath to find out what happened to Mother's cake. I just felt so bad for her I did not have the heart to post about it. The problem was, and I really hesitated to tell her, was the use of TWO smaller pans instead of one large one as Delia states in the recipe. But let us not dwell on the mistakes of last year. As a new year begins I, like so many others, want to do a huge clear out of junk and begin some serious painting. Starting with my bedroom that has patiently been waiting for a make over. The iron bed I now have but I would like to start painting and am thinking of a pale blue or blue/green. Don't you just love the bedroom above?

And how pretty is this? But I often wonder how dirty/stained a padded cloth headboard would get? But so terribly beautiful.

Oh and my holidays were spectacular. My girlfriend and I drove down to pick up my daughter at uni on the 13th and she was here for two glorious weeks. Two weeks of eating, movie watching and cosy cuddles under eiderdowns. She had to return to school on the 30th for one and half weeks training before school even begins, but I am thankful for those blissful days together with ALL the family.

And it was a Sorel Christmas. The far right black ones were hands down my favs but not so practical. So I went for the fur trimmed ones second from the left. DN1 recieved gorgeous tan leather ones from her BF and DN2 got the short black ones.

Bring on the snow!

Eiderdown Love

I am totally aware of the fact that this is a terrible picture, but the battery ran out of the camera and I had to use my blackberry. This is an eiderdown I found last week for a very good price. We know how eiderdown crazy I am right? Well this one is stunning. It is a pale green/blue with pinks, egg blue, greens just too beautiful for words. Did I mention it was like brand new? Right now it is in DN2 bedroom, the colours are quite lovely with her Cath Kidston colours and the touches of the Laura Ashley that are spread around the room. She will be home for Christmas around the 15th. The poor thing has been sick for over two weeks now and it is getting her so down. It is hard enough having away but when she is ill I JUST WANT HER HOME. I want to make her tea and honey and chicken soup and dippy eggs with toast soldiers.

Again trying to bring in all the flowers from the garden that are too healthy and beautiful to leave to the elements. Where these are going to go when the Christmas decorations come out I have no idea.

Okay, I know these pictures aren't the greatest either but it's the best I could do.

Do you bring in your geraniums in the fall? I have some that are 3 or 4 years old now. Where do you keep them?

Ahh the beautiful Megan Fox. You can find zillions of photos with Megan wearing their clothing. She seems to live in it and now that I have been wearing their items I know why. The pants do something to your bum. In a very good way. It will look better. I am not kidding here.

I am totally hooked on this clothing line now. Everything I put on makes me look (and feel) GREAT. The pants can be worn with almost anything. Of course you wear them for working out, but you can dress these pants up no problem. With a nice cosy sweater or a comfy cardi everything will look good with these. They have an online site although I have several stores quite close. You have to try it. You will love it! My next purchase will be the yoga coat. Water repellent with a hood. Just what I need.

Autumnal roses. And the only lobelia that did well in the whole garden. Nice.

Quick peek at the potting shed. Still waiting for a few odds and ends. I still have to paint the door the blue/grey colour, it is just primed.

And I think the tin on top is new (to me). I found it in the summer and I think I forgot to show you.

Unpopular Opinion

Before I begin, let me first say I love Christina Strutt style. Her sitting room is so tranquil and soothing.

But having just read her new book, "At Home with Country" I must say I was disappointed. I felt as though it was just a very large, expensive Cabbages and Roses catalogue. Almost every room is styled with her fabrics. Cushions, curtains, tea towels, the list goes on. Again I love her style and her fabrics are indeed lovely but I found it a bit much.

I do own most of her books and love her tips and philosophies with natural cleaning and her re-use, reduce kind of ethic.

I am thinking I am on my own with this. Any opinions out there?

Camera Lazy

Too lazy to find the digital camera, find batteries that are charged, take photos, upload to computer, resize and post. Just sending some from my blackberry. I am reading the Miss Read series, and loving them.

It is ridiculously hot here. Mid thirties (C) with humidity. Gross. Today is suppose to be cooler but tomorrow just as hot. Gross. I want cold nights and cool, fresh days. I want to cosy up in duvets and take walks with grey woolly cardigans.

Oh and bad pug. Barking his fool head off every time the crazy dog next door teases him. He just doesn't understand he is playing with his mind.

This is one of the rooms I am thinking about painting. I am still debating about the colour. This colour has been very warm and really the perfect colour for a more formal living area and dining room.

But change is in the air...

As part of my plan to stay busy the potting shed is in the process of being built.

Along with the potting shed project I also want to paint my bedroom, the living room at some point (really big job) and a few other rooms.

I love all these photos.

But let's face it, they are a step beyond a simple potting shed aren't they?

But they are so lovely.

I want one of each!

As I said, I am trying very hard to stay as occupied as possible, both physically and mentally. I also want to thank you all for your sweet and thoughtful comments. I LOVE the bloggy world. I know many of you know exactly how I feel.

A Rather Large Confession

I know I haven't popped in at all the last month and I should have. I really should have. But I couldn't. I mean the beginning of August was really quite busy and I knew that was going to happen but the last week and a half I HAVE HAD THE TIME TO COME AND POST. I even have a few bits and bobs I could have shown you that have been picked up here and there throughout the summer. BUT I DIDN'T. The truth is I am not dealing with my second daughter going away to university very well. I mean I am not breaking down and crying all the time. I know this is a sort of a crossroad with new choices and new paths.

And I know it is a time for a couple to reconnect, blah blah blah. But the truth of the matter is my husband and I have always connected. We have an amazing relationship. He is part of me. My soul mate, my confidant, my lover. I am incomplete without him. He has been an absolute sweetheart since I came back from dropping her off. He purposely booked up the following weekend to the point of near exhaustion to keep my mind and body busy. He calls me a few times a day just to say "hello". And I have two other daughters. The oldest is 21, still goes to uni and lives at home and the youngest is 12 and we are still active with her. But you don't replace one child with another, do you? I guess I'm just trying to say to please be a bit patient with me and I will try to get back into the swing of things as soon as possible.

I plan on doing a few painting and decorating jobs over the next couple of months so I will try and keep you posted with before and after pics.

Roses, Peonies and Thrifty Finds

Hello my friends. Today I have gone through my pictures on the computer that I saved for you. These were my lovely peonies. They are quite finished now as the wind has been atrocious and many downpours had left them sodden. Thank goodness I cut them in plenty of time.

And that sweet bookmark? My dear mother made it for me for Christmas and it is one of the most treasured gifts I have ever received from her.

Just a snap of a dahlia and the pretty Mother's Day card I received.

The forget-me-nots were quite abundant this year. I had them spread all over the house. Every available vessel had wee blue flowers peeking out.

Such a pretty little flower, so humble.

Alfred de Dalmas. Has not made an appearance in my garden for many, many years. Two years ago I moved it to a new location and lo and behold, gorgeous blooms.

My dear, sweet William Baffin. Never, ever disappoints me.

Oh, you beautiful boy!

While we are talking about flowers, look at this sweetie I picked up. Charming tin with the most vivid colours. Really makes me want to pop something in the oven to fill it with!

And have been very lucky with the pink and green. A yummy pink stripe pillowcase and a little rosebud one as well. A wonderful sheet, all rosy and some stunning Laura Ashley fabric with tiny flowers although I am not sure what pattern this is. Anyone? Adorable all the same though.

The May picture from the BBC H&A calendar. Tranquility.

My summer blankets are coming out of hibernation. The big chunky eiderdowns and duvets are going to be put away after they are aired and their covers washed. I have quite a collection of the chenille/candlewick covers now I am thinking I may sell one or two. Greens and pinks are my favourite. The top one is a lovely pink but it looks white in the photo. I am also going to sell off some of my Cath Kidston/Ikea Rosali items this summer. Once I know how much I will need to send off with my daughter to university I will be doing a nice clear out. Waaaay too many linens in this house!

A touch of gardening but not nearly enough done.

For those that don't know, it is Prom Season.

I have been shopping my little heart out with DN2. Her prom is at the end of May and her schedule just opened up about a week and a half ago. Hockey Season is now over, she played her last game in Canada two weeks ago :( She needs a prom dress and it isn't easy!

She favours the halter type dress and it is what suits her the best. She has a very large bust (38C,D) and I love that she wants full length. It makes the shoe thing not as big of a deal.

And I have to get some dressy things as well. I had a baby shower two weeks ago, then I have a wedding shower, a wedding, and a christening to attend this summer and I don't think my usual track pants and hoodie will go over too well at these events.

I need to find more shops geared towards my age group without the dowdy "my mother-in-law would wear that" look.

But I love looking at these dresses! Do you have a favourite?

After I crocheted the granny to the size of my cushion form I cut up a felted cashmere sweater and used that for the other side. I used the ribbed bottom of the sweater for the folds, eliminating the need for a zipper or button closure. I hand sewed the crochet front to the cashmere back.

Hello! I am back! But before I forget, as I usually do, here is the April picture from the BBC H&A Calendar.

And before I went away I had picked up the March issue of Country Homes and Interiors but I did not have a chance to show you the lovely images. I lurve this wallpaper with all my heart and soul.

I fell in love with this yummy sofa.

The most charming bedroom all white with the pop of colour we all love.

How spring-like is this? Too beautiful.

I want to get in the garden right now. Our temperatures are to be around 20-24 C for the next few days, how crazy is that?

Hockey was wonderful. We won the Gold Medal in overtime. It was my daughter that scored the winning goal. This means that her school hockey team is the best in the Province. What a way to end her graduating year! She was interviewed several times while we were there and had a radio interview and newspaper shoot when we came home. She's kind of a big deal in the girl's/women's hockey world. Did I mention she hates any kind of attention? Some of the interviews I don't even know about as she refuses to tell me, she gets embarrassed.

Quick post today. March break and trying to keep the youngest busy. Here is something I thought was quite magnificent. Ever wanted to granny something but it was NOT a square? Well here is your chance. I grannied this lovely stool/storage thingy and BELIEVE me it is 100x better than what it used to be.

Ladies, I cannot thank you enough for your lovely, comforting comments. They have meant so much to me in my gloom.

Now for some answers. So many of you have commented about the lamp. This is an Ikea lamp. It has been pimped. I cannot remember the name of it but I am sure both the base and shade are still available there as it has been around quite a while. I painted the base in Farrow and Ball Parma Gray. I saw this over at Vanessa's quite a while back and she helped me out with it, being the sweet lovely person that Vanessa is. Do you ever visit Vanessa? Well go so hi. I'll wait.

Oh, you're back? Good. Just another quick observation. Do you ever go to make the bed in the morning (or late afternoon, no one is here to judge) and see the sun streaking in and wish you could just hop back in? That is how I felt this morning and thought of all of you and snapped this photo.

Please accept this jug of tulips to make up for my lack of words and pretty pictures. I meant to post last week and the the bleedin camera had dead batteries and by the time they were recharged I was in pain. I had a wisdom tooth extracted last Wednesday and I am still in pain. Friday I went to the library to pick up a book and did not realize I was standing at a counter without a clerk. The sweet lady at the next counter over asked if I was okay and I said no I wasn't and she said I looked rather pale and said I didn't really look that well. The question is how long would I have stood there like an idiot before I noticed there wasn't anyone at the desk? I probably should not have even been driving. I went back to the dentist today and he told me I have dry socket which isn't pleasant. Now I am on antibiotics. But I have blubbered enough.

I wanted to post this last week but of course, too late. The March photo of the BBC Home and Antique calendar.

Isn't it wonderful how just looking at pretty pictures can make you feel that much better?

Lest you believe I have been up to no good, here are pictures to prove you quite wrong.

A granny square cushion.

A cushion that has been in the making for about one year.

A cushion that started out as a blanket with the odd bits from the ripple blanket. Half way through, the thought of continuing on to form a huge blanket really did not appeal. But there is some yummy yarn in there I tell you. Have you ever used Lamb's Pride? Well there is some in there and they do have such scrumptious colours.

The finished baby hat. You know I just want a little one around just to knit for?

Too much sweetness, really.

The English Home

Generally speaking, I am not a huge fan of the magazine "The English Home". Although I find it quite pretty to look at, I find the homes a bit too too if you know what I mean. I prefer a bit of realism in my home and in the magazines that I buy. Country living and BBC Home and Antique are a bit more my style. However, the April issue of TEH is so pretty I had to share with you.

Several articles piqued my interest this month and most seem to have the same theme. Neutral colours mixed with charming patterns. Now that is my style.

And I thought this beautiful green floral wallpaper was to die for.

Ah, a bit of realism to relish.

But that's just my opinion ;)

In typical Knitty, Vintage and Rosy style, I am a little late with yet another post. This is the H&A Calendar I have been meaning to show you. Really gorgeous.

I especially love this room. Pink, Blue and florals, what is not to love?

This was January. Again, more love.

And February. Reminds me of Selina Lake styling. What do you think? So terribly pretty though.

Oh, that's Knitty, Vintage and Rosy styling. Ha! Just loved the look of this combination on the window sill and thought I would take a few snaps although, of course, the light is still rubbish today.

For some reason, I adore these four pieces together. The Greengate jug, the Cath Kidston jug, the little green cornishware sugar pot and the oval rose plate.

Doing a load of dishes from last night as we had a little get together for DN3 12th Birthday. I know, I know I must me getting up there if my youngest is 12 right? I've been a little sad lately too as the billet (girl that was staying with us from my daughter's hockey team) that was living here moved out last week. She decided to move back home so she could graduate with her class. It hits too close to home knowing that DN2 is leaving my little Rosy nest in August to go away to University. Do you ever just block things out of your mind just to totally avoid the emotions? That is what I am doing right now.

So to perk you and I up, a few glamour shots of the puss.

As he is male, and spring is nearing, he isn't really around too much. I think he has a few, no correction, hordes of lady friends that want to have a liaison with him, if you know what I mean, wink wink.

He is a fighter as well. Comes home with a new injury every day. This week it is on his right front leg and one on his tummy. The ones on his nose have just finished healing.

So he appears to be a lover AND a fighter.

No wonder they are lined up at the back door for him.

I have been asked a few questions lately and I think now would be a good time to answer them. But first I must tell you about my knitting progress. I am working on the second sock so going at the same rate as the first sock, I should be finished that one by this time next year. I am also working on another baby hat for my little niece/nephew that will be arriving the end of April. (I have so many things I want to knit but feel I am a little late at the starting line)

I wanted to get some Debbie Bliss or Rowan at my lys, but they order both brands in and I wanted yarn NOW. So I picked this up and it is gorgeous. Has anyone ever worked with this? Quite heavenly. And the colours a so beautiful. It is Sirdar Calico. Yummy.

How pretty are those colours?!

I picked up an issue of BBC mag and look who was featured in there? Btw, do we know how old this issue is? Yes, like October or November. Aren't we colonials up to date over here ;) Such a wonderful article, Julia, congratulations!

Oh yes on the computer, writing a post and not a bed made in the house. Yes, if you are checking up on me it is 10:07 am EST and not a bl#*dy thing done all morning.

Not that I always make their beds.

But sometimes, if the mess is really getting to me, I do. Slightly obsessive perhaps.

3. I have had a few people ask about the Amy Butler Gumdrop Pillow. It is a copyrighted pattern. I would be in breach of this copyright if I were to post it here or email it to you. The pattern can be found at many online resources and at most sewing shops, especially if they carry her fabric.

And a few funny things...

1. I had a reader email me asking what she thought was an obscure question. Would I happen to know what the pattern of the blue dishes are on the "All Creatures Great and Small" series? Now, dear readers, I ask you, is that an obscure questions for those of us that absorb every detail of our favourite programs? That some us actually watch these shows, specifically for their curtains, dishes and furniture?
My reply was that I did not know but I would try and watch the shows (I have them on DVD) and help her figure it out. In the meantime, I suggested she try Lovers of Blue and White.
She did. And found her pattern and where to buy it.

I will guess you are just dying to know what I am up too, right? I am so funny. I am eating, savouring and well not to put too fine of a point on it, pigging out totally on the long sought after, previously mentioned biscuits. I FOUND them! Oh the excitement is palatable here. Shortly after I touched on this subject, right here on my little blog I discovered them at my grocery store under a new name. They are now a President's Choice product and are still the same biscuit I have bragged about so many times. After spotting them I had to tell my husband to turn around while I scooped the lot off the shelf. They are now safely hidden in the sideboard in the dining room. Ahhh, relief.

The curtains have been made by my lovely and talented seamstress. I could not get a better shot as the sun is quite hidden in this spot of the house. But they are lurvely. Trust me. I will try and get a better picture so that you can truly appreciate the Sanderson beauty.

Sock knitting at its finest. Slow but beautiful. I knit a pair of these about 3 or 4 years ago in a mauve colourway. They wear like iron. Four winters of wear and not a hole. If you like sock knitting I cannot emphasize more the durability of this yarn. The camera did not pick up the gorgeous colour. It is a pink and pinky red with a moss green.

And finally, washing the green linen curtains that are usually hanging here. I won't get into too much detail but the dog basket sits right beside the curtains on the right and they were quite, um, dirty in that area...however last time I washed them the linen shrunk a wee bit and of course the lining didn't and well I guess that's another job to put on the list.

I am going to assume that everyone had just the jolliest of holidays. We had several days of doing absolutely nothing. Snuggled down in comfy flannel jimjams watching movies and consuming loads (not exaggerating here in the slightest) of chocolate. Did I mention I found these?

Life is good.

Cath Kidston Christmas Catalogue

I know the catalogue has been out for a while and I have been meaning to comment on this since the day mine arrived. On page 10 there is this photo of the girl drawing her bath. At first I thought what a lovely photo! Right? Then I looked really closely at her feet. Is it just me or do they look dirty? And her toenails are, well, how can I put this nicely? They are not clean. I was a little unsure about this and showed it to my husband. His comment? "I don't think she shaved her legs either." Well it is winter right? I guess my legs don't look the best at this time of year either! Well, what do you think? Bad photography or dirty feet?

That being said, I did love so many items and of course do want it all.

And lastly, a handy tip. I always cut out the little fold over shopping list and use it as a bookmark. Do you?

I have been totally playing with blogger and flickr, trying to figure out how to easily enlarge my photos without too much html knowledge.

If anyone out there knows how to do this simply please let me know. This is a little baby hat I knit on the weekend. My husband's sister is pregnant and I thought I would knit up something for her for Christmas. The little crochet flower can be taken off if it is a boy. I made the pattern up myself after spotting it on this blog. I just fell in love with that wee hat and could not for the life of me find a pattern on the web so I winged it.

I am still reeling from the discovery of the horrid conditions at the Toronto Humane Society. Yesterday, it was discovered that the food they have been feeding the animals is over six years old. I just cannot comprehend that there was not any kind of supervision or governing body keeping an eye on this organisation. Who watches the watchers?

Jam and Bread

My bedroom is very special to me. I tend to luxuriate in there. I knit in bed. I read in bed. I drink tea in bed. I eat jam and bread in bed. Sometimes, on rainy Saturdays or Sundays, my husband and I just spend salubrious hours, cosied right in beneath the duvets. Right now it is a very soothing green colour. I know it needs to be painted but I loathe the thought of actually doing it. I just lurve this bedroom with the gingham headboard and the ever so lovely wallpaper. Tranquil.

My problem is I love too many styles. And colours. And patterns.

I wish I could pinpoint the look I really want. But, alas, I cannot.

Blues, greens and pinky reds are definitely some of my very favourites.

How sweet is this spot blanket? And the lovely, lovely flowery sheets? Divine!

See how I just love it all? How I cannot make up my mind? Too many choices I tell you!

And just look at that scrummy pale blue pillowslip? And let us not forget that perpetual problem of the husband. Where are the boundaries there?

Pumpkin Pie

I know I should be posting pictures of my trip, and I will but I just had to show you someone special.

This is Pumpkin. He showed up at our door around Thanksgiving. Hence the name Pumpkin. He is very, very handsome. And lovable. He doesn't seem to mind the crazy lady that feeds him in her pajamas during the daytime.

He also does not seem to mind kids going in and out with hockey bags, knapsacks and hockey sticks.

And although he knows they are way beneath him, he tolerates the occasional pug that crosses his path. You just know in his head he is saying "silly bugger".

Hello my Pretties! I can only hope your Hallowe'en was as enjoyable as mine. Today is my birthday and we have been celebrating it all weekend. My middle daughter had to leave today for Vancouver as she has been chosen to play at the Women's Nationals for hockey. We are flying out on Wednesday for six days to watch the games. What I Am Doing

I was trying to figure out which gingham I wanted for the cushions I wish to sew. The phone rang. DN1's professor lost her assignment. Can you please email it to me mum? Now, I need to hand it in. Stop.

Thought about adding another row to my ripple blanket (yes, I am still crocheting this, unbelievable, I know). And thank you so much Fiona, for the lovely cushion! Phone rang. DN3 has forgotten gym clothes. Stop.

In between sad and pathetic distractions, I gaze at my new (to me) enamelware teapot. It matches the coffeepot I got earlier this year, do you remember?

Arrange potted geraniums in window in slight haphazard manner. Phone rang. DN2 and billeted hockey friend are sick at school, need picking up. Stop.

Come home and make cup of tea. Decide to pack it in for the day.

While lying on sofa reading Caroline Graham (good one) and drinking tea, I look out window and think I should have just done this all day...

So Much Prettiness

I would truly like to say I have been a busy bee. That has not been the case. I mean I have been busy doing the usual, but nothing crafty or really fun. I have such a chaotic schedule over the next little while I just feel a bit overwhelmed. But nice things are happening as well. For example, do you remember this charming fabric I found last fall and have been meaning to make into curtains for the kitchen? (We will not discuss exactly how long it has taken me to actually take the fabric to my lovely seamstress that does extraordinary things with the wee bits of fabric I give her). Well as I was perusing Nostalgia at the Stonehouse, don't I come across just the most gorgeous fabric on this little chair she re-covered?

I thought "What beautiful fabric!". Then thought, my gosh, is that the same fabric that I have? Niki seems to be pretty sure it is. And if a professional like Niki thinks it is well than so do I.

Well, what do you think? I am sure you have all visited her before but if you haven't why don't you drop by? She has lots of handmade goodies as well.

And another little surprise that warmed my heart. Jane (sadly blogless) emailed me to tell me she has been using my hexagon knitting pattern to make this stunning blanket for her son that is going away to University. She got the idea from this magazine page and had googled "knitted hexagon pattern" and found mine. It is so terribly nice to hear from people that have used the pattern. Brilliant job, Jane!

I am working on one or two things as well but the camera is missing (again) and I will not torture you all with the other sad excuse of a camera that is our backup.

As I was watching an episode of "Nigella Bites" the other night, I was totally struck by the appearance of Nigella. She had long stringy hair, parted in the middle, a not quite so beautiful complexion and nose that appeared much larger than what she has now in more recent shows. This particular episode was many years old, I presume. I wasn't even sure at the time it was her. I found this older photo of her and it is very much like what she looked like on the old program.

I'm thinking some polishing was done over the last few years. That being said I think she is a beautiful woman. I may even have a little girly crush on her. I think she exudes sensuality with that mix of domesticity that is charming and at the same time nonthreatening.

But that is just my opinion ;)

I know, I know, I could be a bit more inventive than the jug of flowers. But I did some cleanup yesterday for a little get together for the two oldest birthdays (bad mum, 3 weeks and 6 weeks late) and I just thought they looked pretty. And quite frankly, the tidiest area in the whole house.

Things have been so busy and chaotic around here. Loads and loads of laundry (3 or 4 full loads per day), appointments, shopping well you all know the routine, right?

We are still doing tours of schools. The above picture are the dorms at Renssaeler (I will get the correct spelling of this one day). What a lovely campus. Just not sure about the surrounding area. Our first introduction to the city was a transvestite in a purple dress, running shoes and soccer socks at the gas station. Hmmm...

This is Quinnipiac. I did not go with her to this one. She went on an official visit there on the weekend. She is in loooooooove with this one.

And Clarkson. Beautiful, scenic campus. Gorgeous rink (yes, rinks can be gorgeous to hockey players). And did I mention it is only 5 hours from Mummy?

Guess which one I am loving so far ;)

I miss Canadian Home and Country Magazine. It truly was my favourite Canadian magazine. It is now just an online resource. What a shame.

It had lovely photos, helpful hints, and a great source directory in the back to access all the lovely things locally.

I have been very busy the last week or two. We are now billeting a girl on my daughter's hockey team and I had to set a room up for her. She will be here with us for the next nine months and attend my daughter's school as well. Add that to the five of us already here and DN1 boyfriend that is here 4 or 5 times a week and things can get pretty chaotic. But really cooking for 5, 6, 7 what difference does it make really? At least they are here right?

I am leaving Friday morning for a girls' weekend away and will be back Sunday. Then Wednesday I am on a road trip with DN2 for unofficial visits to some of the universities that are offering her scholarships. We are starting out at the University of Connecticut, then on to Rensaeller, Syracuse and Clarkson. It will be a hectic few days. As you can see I really, really want her close to home. She will be officially visiting some other schools as well and she has to narrow that down to three or four. Possibly Northeastern, Yale, Princeton, Quinnipiac, Boston U and UNH. But these are so faaaaar! I know I am going to have such a hard time with this leaving thing. In another year this may be a very depressing little blog to read ;)

No not the lavender silly, although that is a perfect colour is it not?

I meant trying to find the perfect blue for my gate.

I know I want blue but I cannot find the blue I want.

Does that ever happen to you? Or do you always find the perfect colour as soon as you get to the paint shop?

I want that colour blue you see in France on all the shutters and doors.

I cannot describe it but have seen it so many times in books and magazines.

Are there any blue experts out there?

Do you like it? I did tell you there was a surprise in the works. I made the Amy Butler gum drop pillow before I left to go to the country. I am very pleased with the result. By the way, there is no way this is a pillow. It is an ottoman or pouffe. It is huge. Massive. A definite footstool.

But oh so cute! It took me about four hours to complete. The more advanced sewers would be about two hours I would think. And loads of stuffing. Loads. The object here is to get as much in as possible to enhance that "overstuffed" look.

Well, are you going to try it? If I can do it you certainly can!

My Pretties!

I have missed you! We have been so busy here the last week or two. We have done 14 university interviews and have to more in the coming weeks. My daughter will have to narrow it down to 2 or 3 favourites then we will make official visits to the campuses sometime in September or October. These meetings have eaten up so much of my summer! Thank goodness we are going away soon. It has been utter chaos trying to get everyone together for holidays. The oldest can only get two days off of work which do not coincide with DN2 days off between tryouts for both the National Hockey team and the Provincial Hockey team. Does anyone else have this trouble with older children? Trying to get everyone together just for a few days has been exhausting to say the least.

Our weather here has been very rainy. No picnics or outings, really. Perhaps I should be utilizing this downtime with craft? Mmmmm? Could there be a little surprise in the works? I am also starting to get things together to go to the country. I always pack some nice rosy sheets to take along in case I dislike the furniture or if it is leather (sticky humidity + leather seating = well you get the picture). I also bring a few blankets and of course our favourite pillows with our vintage pillowcases. As a result, once I get there and arrange things to my specification it almost looks like home.

There is a George Carlin skit called "stuff". Whenever I pack, I think of this routine. That is me. I have to have my "stuff" around me to feel comfy, cosy. Are you like that when you go on holidays?

I did tell you July would be crazy for me. It is. We have had two universities visit us per day for the last couple of days. These visits are lasting close to 3 hours each. I think we need a little break. I have been trying to squeeze in some crochet along the way and found a wonderful deal at an online shop quite close to here. I love the Cascade 220 for the ripple blanket and managed to snag quite the bargain. If you are interested in the name I will look it up for you, the name has popped out of my mind at the moment.

I am also trying to catch a few moments in the chubby chair for reading. However this is the favourite chair in the house for reading so you almost have to reserve it. Great for napping too.

A quick shot of the garden. I have been negligent in this department. We must spend the weekend weeding, trimming and mowing. (Is that any kind of break?!)

Finally a bit of bloom. We have had below average temperatures with quite a bit of rain. But I am not complaining! Others are, which astounds me. What is wrong with 22/24 degree temperatures? We are usually frying in the mid 30's at this point.

Lovely pink hydrangea is also loving these days.

As is her cousin, blue.

Today is Canada's 142nd Birthday! What better way to celebrate than to showcase the foody bits that we have contributed to the world. First, buttertarts! Yummmm. You have had a buttertart before, yes?

Of course, you have had the delightful epicurean experience of letting a Nanaimo bar melt on your palate?

A beaver tail perhaps. Deep fried goodness with syrup or chocolate drizzled on it?

And one of my personal favourites, poutine. Chips with gravy and melted cheese.

Rose and Peony Parade

More peonies to love and admire. My mother's are not fully in bloom yet but I will be pilfering some from there as well. Mine are almost finished.

This is Earth Song. What a heavenly shaped rose. Such a pretty colour as well.

John Cabot is doing his bit. It was so windy I was unable to get a really nice photo. I am sure there will be more to come.

William Baffin looking every so charming. He is a very hard worker and loves where he is living. Morning sun and later afternoon sun seems to be his preference. There are hundreds (thousands?) of buds, just waiting to open.

We are still waiting for the Fairy and my Celeste. Soon.

My summer is really shaping up to be a busy one. I have enrolled the youngest in a camp for two weeks and hopefully a soccer camp later in the summer. We will be away up north for a week or two with my mum and dad, which we do every year. I am also suppose to be going away again with some friends for a weekend shopping in the US and will also be making some trips down there for University trips for DN2. We also have 8-10 home visits lined up with the US universities that wish to come see my daughter at home. This will be taking up much of July.

Again, not sure where all this "time" is suppose to materialise from.

Also, I just made up another batch of the laundry powder. It really lasted quite a long time and am ever so pleased with it. Have you tried it yet?

I know what you are saying. I know I am taking way too many flower photos but I am truly just trying to see how this camera works.

Apparently there is this menu for colour. I have just discovered it. It is Vivid. I think it makes a bit of a difference. More vivid, maybe. (I am so funny)

Okay this one not so good. I don't think I waited long enough for full power after the last picture. Trial and error.

And finally, this is Celeste (celestial) rose. It is always a gamble whether she will bloom. Aphids attack her like there's not tomorrow. Will I get blooms? We shall see. I am patiently waiting for John Cabot, William Baffin and the Fairy to bloom. Aren't you excited? More flower pictures coming soon ;)

Lazy, Rainy, Flowery Sunday

Most of us are still snuggled in bed. It is very cloudy and overcast today with rain expected for the next few days. Motivation to run out to the garden and get a few of these beauties before they are pummeled by rain. That would be my luck. The hail storm we had a few weeks back destroyed many of the leaves and a handful of buds. I have showcased them in my enamel teapot and or coffeepot.

This picture is definitely more true to the colour. What a pretty blue. I wish I could find more enamel in this colour, it is so delightful.

Doesn't she seem terribly happy on the dresser?

The rest of the day will be with Romantic Homes. Me, tea and romantic charm. That's it.

Oh, and Mr. Youknowwho as well. He doesn't take well to rain at all. He is usually curled up into a ball with BOTH feet and part of his snout in my slippers. How cute is that?

Yummy Potting Sheds and other Ideas

How absolutely delightful. During my quest for shed resources I have come across this brilliant book. Yes, maybe a little more Chic than Shed, but I am loving this book. How utterly bohemian would it be to have this caravan in your back garden!

A relaxing cup of tea and a biscuit here surrounded by all the flowers you love?

Or to dine alfresco with all this Christina Strutt loveliness? How beautiful is that?

I want to cosy up on this daybed with a book and revel in the squishiness of it. And how gorgeous is that heart shaped cushion with that stunning print?

A guest bedroom shed.

I must admit I am truly loving this but where would my lawn mower and bug killer go? It just doesn't co-ordinate somehow with the chintz.

Love the rustic charm of this.

I just like this. No special reason other than a feeling of contentment.

I love the white beadboard and the chandelier.

Okay, maybe technically they are not true potting sheds but the photography and rooms are amazing. I love this book and have been through it at least 5 times. You simply must beg, borrow or buy this as I am sure you will be as captivated by the beauty as I am.

Enamelware Goodies

While my husband and I were busy all weekend painting the porch, my mum was off at garage sales. As we are busy painting, my mum calls, my husband answers and tells me she wants to speak to me. As busy as I was, I am glad I took the call. She was at a garage sale where the woman was getting rid of all her enamelware. I quickly shot over (after telling my husband, "My mother needs me") and got these lovely pieces. A white bucket for planting flowers, a white jug and the soon to be favourite, baby blue teapot/coffee pot. It truly is baby blue. Not this colour my camera has chosen to show.

Really, it is blue.

And a few other treasures I have picked up along the way. A charming jam pot already low on jam! A lovely refrigerator box and these adorable plates.

I love the rosy trim with the blue. So delightful, I just wish there had been more, I only found 3 of them.

The little white lantern was picked up as well. Blimey! Who can pass up $1.99 with the candle too? (Even if you already have too many to count, they are great to have)

Oh and the wicker sale. Just kidding. This is the porch furniture waiting to go back as soon as the floor dries. Please ignore the major construction going on next door. Speaking of which, would you be angry if you constantly had strangers up your driveway almost in your back garden at least once a day? This gets me mad. People checking out the renovation next door. No problem. But not on my property, please! My youngest is eleven and I really do not need strangers in my back garden especially if my daughter is playing back there. Do you think I should put a PRIVATE PROPERTY sign out? I really don't think it will stop them. Do you know I have had one man get mad at me for telling him to move? Just a little venting, thank you. Moving right along...

Thrifty Thursday

The title should actually read "Cleaning Thursday".

I am cleaning and tidying as best I can, but between going outside to clean up branches and rubbish that is quickly accumulating on my property from the wind, and dropping off kids at school, I really am not getting much done.

While cleaning the girls' bathroom I thought I would take a picture of the little pink wicker shelf I picked up last weekend with my mum. Isn't it charming?

I don't know whether to leave it the way it is or hang it? What do you think?

I am still learning about the camera and have not quite figured out the best setting for the indoor daytime shots.

With my new camera.

I may have fallen in love...again. I am quite enjoying it but this is from the first 10 minutes of owning it so please be patient with me.

It will take me weeks (when I say "weeks" we all know I really mean "months" right?) to figure out all the bells and whistles, of which I hope there are few, as I am so tekkie challenged it really is not funny (I am waiting for hockey daughter to come home from Calgary to change the cartridge of the copier/scanner thingamajiggy).

This is the fabric I will be using to make the curtains for the newly painted kitchen. Do you like it? It is a gorgeous flowery linen and I just lurve it.

More practice.

Is it just me or is green and blue just a heavenly mix sometimes?

Now I am not sure if I duplicated any of these photos. If I did, please accept my apologies.

The camera is a Nikon. That is what I finally chose after taking a good 45 minutes to figure out which camera had what. Although they all basically have the same stuff when it comes to the point and shoot variety. Thank you all for your suggestions they were helpful.

Didn't I totally forget to tell you how the laundry soap worked? Brilliant! I am so happy I tried it. The laundry smells so clean. I know that sounds silly but it smells indescribably clean and fresh. I think I am now a convert. Oh, and very white and stains seem to be disappearing so I will soldier on with the homemade. The recipe is basically this:

2 cups borax

2 cups washing soda

1 bar of grated soap (I used Ivory as that was what I had on hand)

baking soda (not all recipes call for this so I used one box for the whole lot)

I mixed as I went and ending up tripling the recipe. The key here is you only require a couple of TABLESPOONS per load. Seriously, this stuff will last forever.

So thrilled ;)

I am going to attempt to make my own laundry soap. My middle daughter has eczema and has always had an allergy to a famous name brand laundry detergent so I have always had to use another brand. Lately, with this brand, she has been complaining of itchiness again so I thought I would give this a try. Apparently, you only use a few tablespoons to half a cup for these homemade mixtures. I am making the powdered version. The liquid just seems too icky as you must boil it on the stove. There are many resources on the web for these recipes. Let me know if you attempt any of them. And wish me luck!

Absolutely, for sure, beyond a shadow of a doubt, my camera cannot be fixed. So I need some suggestions from my faithful readers. I know many of you have fantastic cameras and I would love your input. Do I continue with my Canon love affair? Do I try Fuji? Please, all suggestions will be considered. And of course, it must be of the point and shoot variety. I am far too timid to be an SLR girl.

This was my first camera, btw. I loved it. Is that not the most delightful flash ever? It was this little cube that would rotate. Thanks for dropping by, girls.

Almost Done

Hello, you. I am still busy cleaning, putting away, sorting and well, you know how it is after a big paint job.

I am really pleased with the colours. The trim is parma gray and the walls are pointing, both Farrow and Ball colours.

Unforntunately, there have been some fatalities. Two of my most beloved pink transferware cups were broken. Don't ask, but basically trying to do too much at one time. Very upset about that. Especially since I have so much of the set. So disappointed in myself.

But onward and upward. Did anyone watch Grey Gardens? It was simply fabulous. Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange were both phenomenal. I would not be suprised if one or the other were nominated for awards. And the set design was stunningly beautiful. Of course, the costumes were to die for...

Chocolate Deprived Easter for the Knitty Household

Don't I just have the most lovely Easter greeting for all my faithful readers. I planned some appropriate words and some little tidbits to wish you all a Spring Welcome etc. Instead, tonight we come home to a very hyper dog.

In the living room we find all that remains for the children's special day is a few ripped up pieces of plastic and cardboard. The sweet chocolate Peter Rabbit nowhere to be found. The boxes of chocolate given to all three girls from my mum and dad nothing but saliva encased bits of paper and what used to be cardboard.

My pug, however, looks like he gained 5 pounds. And he is WIRED. We have been through this before. Hallowe'en he got into the chocolate bars and devoured 17 bars before we found him and the wrappers. He did not like the Aero bars but had a passion for the Kitkats. He had gone on a chair, tore open the bag, chewed through the box and ate them. Nothing was left except the Aero bars. I immediately called the vet and they told me the real danger is the really good chocolate and not these kind as they have very little "real" cocoa in them. Thank God. He was fine. Just really, really, hyper.

I am really hoping I do not wake up Easter morning to see a re-appearance of the digested chocolate if you understand my meaning.

Hoping you are all having a better one than I. And what the heck can the Easter Bunny produce in the next 8 hours??? All I have in the cupboard is a half eaten package of TimTams and some left over Cinnamon hearts from Valentine's Day...

My New Favourite Book

How pretty are these images? I think this is my new favourite.

You know how I love blue and white. It is so nice to see it incorporated in new and innovative ways. More modern and fresh.

Not quite so matchy-matchy if you know what I mean. But still flows.

I love blues and greens together. And I just love the powerful look of purple and blue like the mix below.
