The End of an Era

For me anyhow. My mum and dad got rid of their car yesterday. Normally, this doesn't affect most people, however, in my case, it is an end to an era. Since I can remember, my parents have always driven a Lincoln Town car. Yesterday, they traded in their last one for, get this, a Yeeeeeee Ha Kia Sportage. My father still drives a huge customized van (he has a toy store) that fits his size (he is 6 foot and maybe 300lbs). He always looked right in a Lincoln. I have so many memories of these cars, some moments are just unforgettable. Our first one, around 1977 was gigantic. You could easily put four adults in the back seat and be comfy. We had it for about 6 months or a year when coming home from the cottage early on a Monday morning (like 6:30 am) it caught fire and eventually blew up. We were on one of Canada's busiest highways, the 400, when it happened. I saw the windshield blow out and the little oval opera windows flew across the highway. Quite spectacular when you are 10 years old! We had several more after that, each one getting a wee bit smaller than the last but oh the memories. We used to drive down to Florida almost every year in one. And of course would load it til the rear was almost dragging the pavement when we would go to the cottage. There's a picture of the Burgundy one at my wedding with my italian brother-in-law standing beside it, looking very cool in tux and sunglasses, with me getting in. Very Godfather-ish. Back to the Kia. I am having a difficult time picturing my father occasionally driving this thing. It seems almost cartoonish. My mother will look great in it. She is 5 foot nothing so it suits her much better than a Lincoln (she had a hard time seeing over the dashboard). I guess change is in the air. Where the heck is my Lysol?

Cool, yet kinda creepy

I found this today. Now type in your address. Now hit "satellite" on the top right side. That's me, waving. Cool, no? But yet kinda creepy. No more bush parties for me.

On a totally different note, that beautiful blue Buttonhole Bag with the green trim is gone. Unfortunately, there will be no "after" shot. A neighbour of my mum's, that occasionally comes to our knitting group (she's 87 years old), dropped so many hints as I was sewing the flower on that I just had to give it to her. It was suppose to be for DN3's teacher for a year end gift but I just felt that I had to give it to the knitter. It felt right somehow. Oh, and a special thanks to Georgia for the wonderful flower patterns.

Okay, you know the drill... Posted by Hello

You know you're addicted to Buttonhole Bags when:

1. You are thinking of a way to knit a briefcase type one for your husband (but in masculine colours).
2. You try and slip this creative, yet habit forming project into every conversation, doesn't matter if it is the postman and he doesn't knit and really doesn't care but has grown to like the crazy woman who doesn't seem to have anything else better to do other than knitting on her porch.
3. At the yarn store, you are no longer interested in cashmere, angora or silks. All you want to know is "Where is your 100% merino/Lamb's Pride/Briggs and Little?"
4. You are trying to convince the children that a BB would be so much cooler than that silly $100.00 Invicta backpack.
5. You begin to wonder how many, exactly, you could knit in 24 hours.
6. Dinners have become freezer meals, grocery store prepared or takeaway.
7. You no longer pick up the telephone unless it is the yarn shop telling you your order is in.
8. You start looking at your favourite wool cardigan that you are wearing and wonder if it would frog well.
9. You try and convince yourself that you need a third/fourth/fifth one.
10. You are able to not only function, but knit on 3 1/2 hours of sleep.

Do We Know About This?

Faery Crafty, in her wisdom and great free pattern knowledge offers this. Gotta love her. On the knitting front, not a whole lot to report, but I did pick up some Briggs and Little at Linda's Craftique on Saturday. And the mystery is whatever shall I make with this wool that felts so well? Guess, come on.

Buttonhole Bag Number...Well who's countin' anyway? (Pre-Spa Treatment) Posted by Hello

Question of the Day

Why would you need a coffin the size of a book of matches? Anyone? Just another conundrum from a knitter, cruisin' the net to avoid seaming.

Seamy Side of Life

Seaming sucks. I know you look to me for poetic phrases but there are no other words to describe the crappiest part of knitting. For shit sake I have redone them 3 times. I need another tutorial here. Wish me luck, I'm going in. And if I don't hurry up and seam the sucker, DN3 will grow again and I will be skinny dipping in the freezing cold frog pond...again.

~~~~*~~~~
On Saturday I hit the dreaded DVP and met up with fellow bloggers, Sandra, Tanya, and Elizabeth at the Knitter's Frolic. It was a bit disappointing yarn wise but really great to finally put a face to the blog. However, my purchases were minimal, just the yarn for mum and the wooden buttons for "Lou". But I do plan on stopping at Camilla Farms on the way up north this summer. The button selection was yarngasmic and they sell the Peace Fleece which I would really like to try.
Conundrum
DN1 has placed me in a very difficult situation. She has asked to borrow my Louis Vuitton purse to wear to school for a civies (no uniform) day. Apparently she planned her deliberation all day yesterday and presented quite an argument last night. Although I do give her top marks for a well organized and thought out debate, I had to say no. I just think she is not responsible enough to be carrying such an expensive purse. So now I will deal with a hormonal teenager that will be in a snit til the cows come home. The trials and tribulations of motherhood. Speaking of trials, I had to go on the shopping trip that every mother of a pre-teenage daughter hates. Yes, the Bra Shop. Now ordinarliy, this may be a somewhat fun experience. Not, however when you have one of these. Hockey playing daughters do not like shopping for bras. Most of them don't even like shopping period (unless it is for new skates or stick). So finding a bra that has no wire, lace, flowers, padding or "push me up" things is not easy. And no, the sports bras are not the answer as this daughter is, how shall we say...well endowed. She needs support. We finally ended up with two she was happy with, 2 hours later. Is there a saint for mothers of teenage daughters?
From Rowan Junior "Lou"Posted by Hello
I am working on this for DN3. I am doing it in a burgundy colour and it is working up very quickly. I also purchased 12 balls of this yesterday at $2.oo CAD per ball. That sounds like a deal, no? I will attempt to make something for DH with it. These are some of my bigger projects and I figured I would start with the cheaper stuff until I am totally confident that I really know what I am doing. I am still nervous about spending $150.00 on a project that I feel destined to screw up.
Ten Reasons I Should Have My Ass Kicked...
  1. I have been on the computer reading blogs since 8:40 am (it is now 10:00 am)
  2. I have not done a damn thing all day except get husband and children off to work/school.
  3. I didn't do a damn thing all day yesterday because that which strikes women to their knees once a month darkened my doorway and insisted on staying.
  4. Dust bunnies are so prevalent under a wing chair in my family room they have started to collect yarn remnants and will soon be posting ransom demands.
  5. Laundry pile is so large I think we are breaking fire exit codes.
  6. Winter/Summer clothes switch has not been done and children are going to school still looking like Kenny.
  7. Backyard is still unraked, unkempt and unpooperscooped, I'll say no more.
  8. I am still in my pajamas (it's now 10:14 am).
  9. I haven't finished my MIL's scarf yet and it has to be done by Sunday and even that is not motivating me.
  10. I know I have to do all this and yet I still sit here with no motivation other than I need another coffee so I will actually enter the kitchen under totally false pretenses.
Why does a yarn delivery bring this much happiness? Posted by Hello
Because although I live in this huge metropolis, I still could not find these fabulous colours to do another one of these. I used to think "why do people mail order yarn when they have so many wonderful choices of yarn stores?" Well now I know. These beautiful little babies came from Beehive Wool and I must say they gave me wonderful service. And the true irony in this? They were shipped to BC from Listowel, Ontario, about a 2 hour drive from me. Am I a sad, pathetic individual if my day was just made by a yarn delivery?
Recipe for Krispy Peanut Butter Squares
Using just five ingredients, you can become a hero today! Posted by Hello
Krispy Peanut Butter Squares (originally posted on the Rice Krispies box)
1 c. brown sugar
1 c. corn syrup
1 c. peanut butter
7 c. Rice Krispies
1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
Method:
In a large saucepan combine sugar and corn syrup. Over medium heat, stir until sugar dissolves or just comes to the boil. Remove from heat and stir in peanut butter. Mix well. Stir in cereal until well coated. Press (I rinse my wooden spoon several times during this process to prevent the sticky problem) firmly into buttered 9x13 pan. Spread with melted chocolate. Chill until firm.
PS I was thinking of you, Elizabeth, during this whole process, yet I am not sure why?
Now this is what it looks like after you smother, I mean spread the chocolate. Posted by Hello
Enjoy! Although most people that aren't as piggish as me actually wait for the chocolate to set. This has never stopped me before. Posted by Hello
It's Like Magic
I know you all have seen the before and after shots but it still amazing me. Although I am a bit worried about the draining of my washer as the fluff/mohair? that came off these suckers was amazing. I hope my washer continues to *work* (praying to Water Gods) and that all that fluff is now out of my drains. That would really be all I need.
On to other things. DN2 has an exhibition soccer game today here. Now ordinarily that would not be significant in itself but it is an OUTDOOR game and maybe you haven't been keeping up with Ontario weather but I don't think if it looks like this, she should be playing.
And my MIL and FIL are returing from here today so I have to hurry and finish a scarf that was for her birthday. I also promised to make some pizzas for their arrival. So gotta go.
